Case study

From affiliate guides to what you already love.

Affiliate Choice has held its name since 2005 and has published free guides since 2022, one topic at a time. In September 2026 we repositioned it around a wider promise, moved all 68 guides to new addresses and took the site off its old WordPress theme. The first full topic, dogs, comes next.

Where it started

Good guides with a promise that was too narrow

A guide called golf affiliate marketing only speaks to people who already want to be affiliate marketers. Make money from golf speaks to anybody who plays.

The idea took shape in 2022: a free guide for almost any subject, from tea to fitness, broken down by who buys and who pays. The index grew topic by topic to 68 guides, each titled as affiliate marketing for its subject. Profit Packs followed in 2024, and business plan templates in 2025, starting with Amazon Associates.

The trouble was the promise. Every guide spoke to people who had already decided to become affiliate marketers, which is a small audience and a crowded one. Most people with a hobby have never heard the term, and in plenty of topics the quickest money comes from somewhere else entirely: walking dogs, coaching, selling what you make.

Search said the same. When we audited the site in July 2026, a domain registered twenty-one years earlier had a domain rating of 3, nine referring domains and no organic keywords at all. Around 418 people had used it in the previous ninety days, nearly all of them arriving direct or from Bing. With so little ranking, there was almost nothing to lose by changing every address on the site, and it would never be cheaper to do.

What we did

Six pieces of work, in the order they happened

The promise, written down before anything changed

A repositioning spec set out every label, link, template and redirect in advance, written so ChatGPT could walk through it one step at a time. Affiliate marketing became one of five ways to earn, "topic" replaced "niche" in everything a visitor reads, and claims nobody could verify, such as thousands of readers and a community forum, came out.

68 guides moved, one hop each

Every guide went from /niche/[topic]-affiliate-marketing/ to /make-money-from/[topic]/ with a 301, exact rules first and pattern rules after. The old index, which had been returning a redirect loop, now hands over to the new one in a single step, and the checks afterwards start with Bing rather than Google, because that is where the visitors were.

Off Newspaper, onto a theme of its own

A purpose-built WordPress theme now renders articles, archives, search, basket, checkout and account in the site's own design, and strips leftover page builder code while keeping the text. A small guard plugin stops the old theme's add-ons crashing previews, and a read-only check plugin compared the site before and after the switch.

One wordmark, one header, every page

The animated wordmark on this page is the one in the site's header. The homepage, Start here, the topic index, About, Contact and nine legal pages are static files, and they share one header and footer with the WordPress pages, so a change made once appears everywhere.

Free to join, and products built for one topic

Membership is free and comes with new-guide alerts, members-only checklists and a member price in the shop, with every download kept in the account. Profit Packs at £14.99 have a landing page of their own, and business plan templates sit at £7.99.

Dogs first, scored every Monday

The first full topic leads with dog walking and pet sitting, because a beginner can be paid for a walk within a fortnight, and layers affiliate income on top. A pillar guide, five supporting articles, a members' checklist and a Profit Pack, promoted with 60 pins and 12 short videos over twelve weeks.

The topic ladder

Pick a topic. See how far up the ladder it has climbed.

Every topic follows the same four steps from free guide to paid product. Most are on the first rung. These five show each stage the site has reached so far.

Why dogs

Dogs, the pilot

A beginner with no audience can be paid for a walk in their first fortnight, while affiliate income from zero traffic takes months. The suggested pass marks by week twelve are 100 new members, 15 pack sales and 500 visits a month to the dog pages. Miss on traffic and distribution gets fixed first; traffic without sales means the offer or the price changes.

Most topics todayAn affiliate guide, labelled honestly

Each one opens with a note saying it covers one way to earn, recommending products through affiliate programmes, and invites the reader to join free to hear when more routes arrive.

Where they are goingA full guide covers every route

Dogs is the first. Each topic the pilot process upgrades gets the full treatment: every way to earn, a members' checklist and a Profit Pack built for it.

The ruleNothing scales until one topic converts

The business plan, the bundle and the next topics all wait for the dog pilot's numbers. The pilot proves the model; it is not expected to earn much on its own.

What carries over

What we would tell you to take from this

Write the promise for people who have never heard the jargon

Affiliate marketing is a method. Most people searching are not looking for a method; they are looking for a way to earn from something they already enjoy. Name what they want and keep the method inside the guide.

Move your addresses while nobody is watching

A site with almost no rankings has almost nothing to lose in a URL change. Do it in one sitting, one hop per redirect, and tell whichever search engine actually sends you visitors, which here was Bing.

Take out anything you cannot prove

Reader counts, weekly guides and a community forum all came off the site. Anyone deciding whether to trust it, or whether to buy it, will check, and one false line undoes the true ones around it.

What we would do differently

Choose the pilot by how quickly a beginner gets paid, not by which guide already exists. Golf was the first candidate because its guide was live. Dogs replaced it once we asked how long the first payment would take.
